Pinoy Salo-Salo Brings Filipino Together at Schurter Park

Updated: Jul 2, 2025

June 28 Saturday, the spirit of bayanihan and Filipino pride was alive and well at Schurter Park as the Filipino Community Association of Slave Lake (TFCASL) hosted Pinoy Salo-Salo to celebrate Philippine Independence Month.

Pinoy Salo-Salo is a traditional Filipino gathering centered around sharing food. More than just a meal, it’s a joyful celebration of togetherness, where families and friends bring homemade dishes, catch up with one another, and enjoy good company.

The event brought together Filipino families and friends for a fun-filled afternoon of food, games, music, and laughter. In true Filipino fashion, the heart of the celebration was the potluck feast, where everyone shared their favorite dishes.

TFCA-SL generously donated a whole lechon, and officers and board members prepared classic Filipino favorites such as Chicken adobo, Afritada, Inihaw na bangus, Igado, Laing, Pancit Canton, Spring rolls, Filipino-style spaghetti, Menudo, Arroz Valenciana. Caldereta, Baked salmon, Pinakbet, and Lugaw, with generous servings of rice, of course!

Sweet tooths were also satisfied with a spread of favorite Filipino desserts including Biko, sapin-sapin, Cassava cake, Kutsinta, Egg pie, Bilo-Bilo, and Sago’t gulaman, along with cakes, cookies, donuts, chips, and more.

The celebration began with a warm welcome from TFCASL President Jenny Konopka, followed by lively games organized by the TFCASL officers. The joyful atmosphere was made even more festive with live music from Kabanda, led by Marlon Abellera, adding energy and excitement throughout the afternoon.

It was a beautiful day of kwentuhan, karaoke and cultural pride. Thank you to all the hardworking volunteers, organizers, and community members who helped bring this event to life.

Cheers to more gatherings that celebrate our heritage and bring us closer together as one Filipino community in Slave Lake!
